"When the cook tastes the soup, that's formative;
when the guests taste the soup, that's summative."

~Bob Stake

Assessment is an essential component of teaching, providing teachers with the ongoing progress and performance of students and establishing steps in effective teaching and learning. However, while the nature of teaching and learning has been going through radical changes, that of assessment hasn't gone far beyond a number of multiple choice testing. Effective and fit-for-purpose assessment tools for learning haven't been embedded in our classroom implementations and thus, resulted in minimized learning. What is more tragic is that common assessment instruments and strategies not only obstruct learning but also fail in giving us accurate, fair, useful and reliable results.

Therefore, no great improvement in assessment can be achieved until a great change takes place in our strategies and in our classroom practices. So how can we, English Language teachers, better monitor and ensure the journey of English language learners from a cocoon to a butterfly? How can we reach an effective should-be standard?

The aim of our conference is to raise questions and find solutions which are of great significance in the standardization of assessment. It will open your eyes to robust assessment means. Enjoy the soup!
