
Carel Burghout is a teacher trainer and senior lecturer at Fontys University of Applied Sciences in The Netherlands. He heads its M Ed department of English and is currently involved in research co-ordinated by the university’s reader for contemporary testing and assessment. Work in the reader’s group includes studying the effects of self-assessment geared towards personal development of teacher-trainers by asking them to consider their perceptions on testing and assessment as well as their practical and theoretical knowledge of testing and assessment. He has been involved in the design of a national curriculum for both the B Ed and M Ed English programmes in the Netherlands and worked on the introduction of assessment programmes for pre- and in-service training in teacher training colleges. He has been a committee member of IATEFL’s Testing, Evaluation and Assessment Special Interest Group since 1999, serving as its Newsletter editor for ten years, as its coordinator and presently as its web-master. He is also a committee member of IATEFL’s Literature, Media and Cultural Studies Special Interest Group.
