A pupil from whom nothing is ever demanded which he cannot do, never does all he can.

                                                                   John STUART MILL

To be successful in life one needs to ask essential questions when reading, writing, speaking and  studying. Yet few people are masters of the art of asking essential questions. Essential questions are rarely studied in schools. We, teachers or educators , are often too busy teaching the content and spend little time, if not any, teaching them how they can “ think and learn the content”.

As English teachers we all know that it is difficult for our students to raise their hands  and ask questions which their classmates may think odd and this actually interferes with their learning.

So we should ask ourselves several questions: What strategies should we adapt to help our students become aware of their thinking and learning? What tactics can we use that will encourage active learning in our classes?

Thus the 3rd ELT Conference “ The Art of Learning: Critical Thinking in ELT” will help us find out ways of  empowering our students as thinkers which will in the long run help them learn to take responsibility over their own learning and to become independent users of English.
